Greco TB70 Thunderbird style bass, made in Japan around 1988, black on black. Greco's Gibson-style offerings are well known and very well regarded, and while there's a fair few LP-ish offerings around the place, these T-Bird style basses are a bit more unusual. It's a supremely mean looking creation: the gloss black finish hits the automotive-inspired lines of the body just right. At a whisker over 4kg it's pretty lightweight, and it balances nicely in the hands. The neck is around the width of a modern P-bass, but with a slightly slimmer rounded profile in the back, which feels intuitive in the hands and never makes you work too hard. Plugged-in, it's hard to resist going straight to a dirty, stoner-doom dirge tone; it's got such a satisfying plump fatness to it. You can get a pretty crisp P-style thump from the neck pickup or a snappy grindy punch from the bridge pickup, and it cleans up nicely... but, do yourself a favour and grab your fuzz pedal. The last couple of these we have had haven't lasted more than a day or two, so get going before... Thunderbird are gone?
