Gretsch G6120DSW Nashville Western Maple Stain 2004
Gretsch G6120DSW Nashville Western, made in Japan 2004, western maple stain finish. The 6120 'Nashville' model debuted in 1957 bearing the name of country music mastodon Chet Atkins, and the shape and setup hasn't changed much since, although Chet was on Gibson's payroll by 2004 when this beauty was born. This particular spin on the classic is called the Nashville Western: it's got more cowboy stuff, folks. You get a bull's horn on the headstock, inlays with cacti and other cowboy stuff, the emblazoned pickguard, gold arrow knobs, a giant G (presumably for 'gangster?') near the F-hole and the quirky chrome Bigsby tailpiece with a a deluxe 1956-style heavyweight arm... oh boy, the when it rains, it pours. And, perhaps most excitingly, you get a pair of DynaSonic singe coils. One pickup was dead on arrival, so we sent it to Tassie's finest pickup winder, Trevor Forman, for a correct-spec re-wind and it's now gloriously alive. The tone is magnificent: fat, wide piano-like bass, open highs with a shimmering musical eloquence and an extremely responsive, expressive midrange that seems to love clean and dirty tones with equal enthusiasm. It just sounds so good, I'm so impressed. The 'Western maple stain' finish is slightly different to the regular 'orange stain', with a bunch of almost birdseye-like grain on show all over the body and especially on the back. I really enjoy this guitar, I'm sure you'll find it most convincing.
