Rickenbacker 620 Jetglo 2007

Ric 620, Jetglo, made in USA 2007. I love this, it's such a cool guitar in so many ways. Rickenbacker's big semi-hollow guitars like the 330 and 360 are probably their most iconic shapes, but the 620 is a classic in it's own right, and has found favour with players like Mike Campbell of The Heartbreakers and Susannah Hoffs of The Bangles. It's a solid maple body with a neck-through construction, similar to the iconic 4001 bass models, with a cute bound top accenting the interesting curves of the slick shape. It's a 24.75" scale, like most Gibson guitars, but has a compact feel more like a Mustang owing to the bridge placement. It's lightweight and well balanced, and you get used to the moderate D-shaped neck pretty quickly. Like many recent Rics, the build quality is great: the details are well executed, and it feels complete and integrous in the hands. The sound is pretty interesting: the neck pickup sounds like a Strat, but with extra oomph and roundness, with an almost P-bass-like fat fundamental note. The bridge  pickup is more like a Tele, with a slicing snarl balanced by a thick, chewy midrange. It's extremely convincing as a rhythm guitar especially, it would be awesome in a punk or singer-songwriter type context. A lot of Rics we get through are pretty minty, but this one has obviously been played a lot, there's a generous dose of play wear all over the guitar. That's super cool I reckon: the black looks awesome having been rubbed up and played in, and it means you get a pretty sharp deal on it too. I give it 620 coolpoints.
