Schecter JL-7 Jeff Loomis Signature Vampyre Red 2009
Schecter Jeff Loomis model, red, made in Korea circa 2009. Jeff wields the shredstick for metal juggernauts Nevermore and Arch Enemy, and even once turned down an offer to join Megadeth. This model was pretty long running, and it's a very practical way into the wonderful world of seven strings. The neck is maple, with a striking maple board on show: it's straight, stable, comfy and not too wide, and feels great under the fingers. The hardtail bridge makes keeping things in tune easy, and the big meaty pickups by EMG deliver the goods: hot, heavy, immediate. The combo of the maple board and ash body lend the tone some extra attack and upper-midrange snarl, which translates to clarity and balance when you add a generous dose of gain. The ash body has a 'burner' style finish, so the grain lines are highlighted with a blowtorch, before the red stain is applied and it's topped in satin clear. It's a great look, especially with the other nasty details like the gothic inlays and black hardware. Schecter's 00s-era Korean guitars have aged very well: they were well made and had solid appointments, so they're very good value these days.
