Bacchus BJB-118, seafoam green, made in Japan 2000. Bacchus came out in the 90s and quickly gained a reputation for outstanding quality. Founding luthier Sensei Momose trained the small crew of factory workers and was famously picky with wood: only the absolute best would do. This bass is truly hand made: no CNC machines are used to cut the bodies and they even make their own pickups in house. It's a very saucy machine in the hands, it just feels amazing. The neck is made from gorgeous quarter-sawn maple and features some pretty grain on the back. It's arrow straight with perfect frets and a comfy slim U shape. The ash body is a nice light example, which makes it easy on the shoulders and adds a heap of natural resonance to the feel and tone. Plugged in, this has that 70s JB grind: heaps of attack and clarity, but it's balanced but a thick, hefty low end with a very satisfying immediate punch. It sounds amazing, frankly. The finish was possibly sonic blue at birth, but it's firmly in the minty seafoam camp now and it looks delightful. Especially paired with the maple board and block inlays... yum yum yum.
