Gretsch 6122S Country Classic I, walnut stain, made in Japan 1992. The Country Classic is the 90s-era version of the Chet Atkins Country Gentleman, re-named owing to a copyright issue when Chet was with Gibson. The original 6122 Gent was originally envisioned as a more deluxe offering than the already established 6120 Nashville model, with a slightly slimmer body for comfort, a slimmer neck, gold hardware and a fancy walnut finish. This was made in the 'rebirth years' period, after Fred Gretsch Jr purchased the family business back from Baldwin Co in 1989, but before he then sold on to Fender in 2001. It sounds stellar! The full body adds depth and warmth to chords, lending rhythm parts a gregarious complexity. The Filter'Tron pickups are clear and biting but with plenty of body and balance; it just sounds so good. It's comfy in the hands too, the natural resonance is immediately apparent. The attention to detail on these Terada-made Gretsch models is always spot-on, every little detail in the build and finish is bag-on. The gold, ebony and walnut combo looks lush, it's got plenty of swagger and looks amazing for a thirty year old guitar. Classic indeed.
