Epiphone Firebird V, made in Korea 2007, vintage sunburst. The Firebird has got to be one of the coolest guitar shapes going around: pointy but smooth, bold offset curves, wacky headstock, two-level body.... it's got an instant swagger that surely deserves a place among upper echelons of guitar-awesomeness. The most common model of Epiphone Firebird is the Studio; they're good, but this model with the proper mini-humbuckers, set neck and mahogany body is a much truer representation of the Firebird vision. Korean-made Epiphones generally get a good wrap, and rightly so. This is beautifully made; there's a lot of care in the details and finish work and you can feel that straight away. The satin finish neck is a nice touch: it's super smooth and a pleasure to navigate; plus, the slim round profile is very intuitive and well weighted against the body. The mini-HBs deliver a bright, open snappiness not really available from a full size pickup; the tone is a great middle-ground between a traditional PAF-style humbucker and a single coil. There's a lot to love here, and a quick google search will reinforce the scarcity of this model: there really isn't many around. Make sure you get some swagtastic new sunglasses to match, okay?
