Epiphone Wilshire Pro, cherry red, made in China 2007. The Wilshire is a cool little oddity. The original models were made from 1959 to 1970 and now fetch a minor fortune, but depsite their increasing popularity, getting a reissue model isn't always that easy either. There's a lot to love. Firstly, it's super lightweight, weighing in under 3kg, and has a certain compact feel that lends it an ease of play. It doesn't suffer from neck dive but sits nicely either on your lap or on a strap, and the double-cut body and set neck make for easy access all the way to the upper frets. The neck is in the same genre as a '61 style SG, although maybe a tad slimmer. It's easy to get along with and while it's not exactly a super slim shred machine, it does rhythm and riff stuff really nicely. The tone sits somewhere between the growly immediacy of an SG and the plonky, dark juiciness of a Mustang or Jag. It's really great for rhythm stuff as there's a very fast, clear attack with enough midrange heft to fill the right amount of space in a mix. Now, it hardly needs to be said, but: it looks exceptionally cool. The quirky 60s curves, odd knob placement, block inlays... so cool. Lots of fun to be had!|
