Fender '72 Strat, black on black, made in Japan 1985-6. Some guitars are cool without having to try at all, and this is one of those. Fender Japan launched in 1982, kicking off with a bang with the release of the famously exceptional 'JV serial' instruments. This 'A serial' example dates to a couple of short years later, made in the same Fujigen Gakki factory by the same people, and yes, it packs a very similar magic. These mid-eighties Strats are blessed with amazing wood selection, which is most noticeable on the neck: heck, it feels so good. It's a moderate U shape, typical of 70s style Strats, carved from a gorgeous piece of golden aged maple and a big slab of proper dark choc rosewood. The body is naturally resonant and loud unplugged, so you know you're in for a good time when you plug it in. The tone on tap is very rich: heaps of attack and punch, but with a lovely sweet eloquent top end that offers great note separation and an airy midrange that responds quickly to changing attack. The big headstock with the bold decals, dark board and lightly aged black finish makes for an understated, sleek-but-streetsmart look that'll work for just about any gig. This rules... you want it, yes?
