Fender Japan '75 Jazz Bass, MIJ 1993/4, natural finish. These '75 style J models with the block inlays and bound board turn a lot of heads, and it's easy to understand why: this is a gorgeous bass. The natural finish has yellowed naturally and really lets the grain of the ash show through; there's some contrasting and mesmerising patterns on show. The ash adds some growl and presence, combined with the golden-syrup hued maple board you get a huge amount of attack, punch, definition and grit. Some ash-body J's weigh a tonne; this one is remarkably light and instantly comfortable. It's very loud unplugged; you can feel the notes pulsing around the body while you play it. The famous Fujigen-era craftsmanship and wood selection is clearly evident here; this absolutely has the 'magic'. If you're after a classy, easy-playing bass that'll deliver night after night, this is surely a perfect companion.
