Fender Jaguar Bass, fiesta red, crafted in Japan 2006-8. These are getting increasingly tricky to find, but oh boy, it's worth the search. There's been a few takes on the Jag Bass over the years, but this one from the mid 00s out of Japan is the coolest. Firstly, it looks spectacular: offset body with all those classic curves, block inlays, matching headstock, heaps of chrome, all dressed to impress in fiesta red. Dang... that's pretty. The full scale neck is slim, akin to a vintage style Jazz Bass, and balances well against the offset body. The real fun begins when you start messing with the switches. There's an on/off for each pickup, like a Jaguar guitar, as well as a phase switch for the bridge pickup, on the panel on the lower horn. Those work with the master volume and tone knobs near the jack. The upper horn has the active gear: a passive/active switch and a wheel each to wind in bass and treble. A one trick vintage-horse this is surely not. You can dial 70s slap spanky tones, big growly P-style beef, or some really lovely full and rich traditional Jazz style balance in there, all with a bit of playing around. Now, as noted above, these don't come around very often...
