Fender Jazz Bass Special, black, made in Japan 1986. The 'Boxer Series' was Fender's Japanese made 'modern' instruments of the mid-eighties: Strats and Teles with Flyod Rose bridges, pointy shaped things, short scale Strats and... some really cool basses. This model only existed for a couple of years. It's closer in shape to a P bass than a J, but with rounded smooth edges, a slightly smaller body, funky electronics and a cool 32" medium scale. The shorter scale is heaps of fun, it has a few effects. First, you get a certain ease of movement, it's an absolute breeze to play up and down the neck. The tone gets a little shorter in sustain and thumpier in attack. The pickups have big fat pole pieces, they're a bit hotter in output than a regular set, which adds some tasty beef to the equation too. The sister model to this, which is the same but with straight pickups, the PJ-555, was played by Duff McKagan of Guns & Roses for a while int he eighties. The slanted pickups add a bit extra grit to the high register, it's very cool. I figured this would be a cool bass but didn't expect to like it, but after a few minutes of playing it, it became my favourite bass in the shop.
