G&L ASAT Special, black, made in Fullerton USA 2013. G&L was started in the 80s by Leo Fender and longtime collaborator George Fullerton; their designs were Leo's final offerings to the world and are among his finest work. The ASAT Special borrows some curves from the Tele, but it gets some fun updates: 22 tall frets, a great high mass bridge and a set of MFD Jumbo single coil pickups to get things popping. First, the neck: it's a deep C type shape, similar to many American Standard examples, but built with a bit more love and care than many F-branded necks. It's fast and friendly, offering great sustain and easy movement, and the dark streaky rosewood looks a treat. The Sperzel tuners, bone nut and hefty bridge make for great tuning stability, as well as transferring plenty of vibration to the body, making for a lively and responsive feel in the hands. The tone on deck is outstanding: Tele twang, but lower on noise, thicker through the low end with a clearer fundamental note and beautifully eloquent on top. It's bright and clear without being harsh, and fat and full without being murky. This is a truly outstanding take on the T-genre, brought to you by the man himself. IYKYK.
