G&L L-2000 Natural Gloss 1997
G&L L-2000, natural finish, made in USA 1997. The L-2000 was Leo Fender final offering to the world of bass guitar, and a fitting finale from the gent who brought us both the Musicman Stingray in 1975 and the original solid body bass, the Precision Bass in 1954. You get a fat pair of humbuckers, an active preamp and a high mass bridge attached to a swamp ash body with a maple neck, and it's a great recipe. The ash/maple combo makes for plenty of natural resonance and midrange snarl. The pickups translate that beautifully: notes hit fast and clear with a walloping low end and all the spank and sparkle you could ask for. It has the aggressive snarl of a Stingray mixed with the eloquence of a Jazz Bass... yum. The neck feels great too, it's got a 42mm nut like a Precision but a slightly slimmer C shape, so it's quick and easy in the hands. A previous owner added a ramp between the pickups, which allows you to alter the tone by moving your right hand to various positions, kinda handy and a cute look too. It's really stuck: we replaced the screws, but it's also glued down heartily, so if you wanted to remove it you'll need to repair the finish underneath... or put a sticker on there, whatever works. This is a monster of a bass that will cover plenty of ground, so hey: put it to work?
