Greco EG-95 gold top, made in Japan circa 2010. This is a more recent example from Greco, and if you were wondering if the brand had lost it's touch by 2010: evidently, they had not. First up, this feels great: it's a slim, round 60s style neck, finished in satin and rubbed to gloss with play, paired with a chambered mahogany body with a carved maple top, weighing in at 3.5kg... a more typical weight for a Strat than an LP, which are often more like 5kg. It's responsive and lively in the hands, with great natural sustain and plenty of unplugged volume. The pickups deliver the goods: clear and fat on the neck with glassy highs and plump lows, creamy and warm on the bridge pickup with abundant midrange kick. The back and sides are stained brown and finished in satin, which adds a warm contrast to the pop of the gold top. The thing looks great, and the play wear visible around the edges only enhances the effect. A quick search reveals that for about the same dollars as this, you could score yourself a new Epiphone LP Standard in gold.... if you hate really good guitars and prefer very okay ones, that is. Good as gold.
