Greco EG700 Black 1978
Greco EG700, black, made in Japan 1978. A black Standard style LP looks so slick, especially with those classy cream details. This is a great example of a 70s Greco, which really show just how good Japanese guitar making had become in barely a couple of decades. The EG700 was a couple of notches above the most basic LP-style offerings at the time, so that meant a couple of nice touches: real mahogany for the body, an ebony fretboard, and Maxon's deluxe U-2000 humbuckers. The neck is slim and quick, similar in shape to a Gibson slim 60s profile, and feels very easy and intuitive to play. The body is unchambered, so it's no lightweight at 4.8kg, but that plays nicely into the tone when you plug it in. It's bright, full and warm, with a bell-like clarity on the neck pickup and a glorious wide, creamy midrange kick on the bridge pickup. It seems to me that an unchambered body with a bit more mass often translates to extra definition in the treble and more focus in the high-mids than a standard LP, and this certainly reinforces that notion. If you're after a very convincing singlecut for under half what a brand new LP Studio fetches in my town (heck, wild days!) then this is surely for you.
