Greco EG700, made in Japan 1981, cherry sunburst. Here we have an exceptional example of a 'lawsuit Les Paul'. The '700' in the model number means that in it's day, this sold for ¥70,000, almost double the cost of the basic model, so it's blessed with some additional glory. You get the good stuff: a pair of Maxon's PAF-style U-2000 humbuckers, an unchambered mahogany body, a premium grade two-piece solid plain maple top, bound fretboard with the nice 'nibs' on the frets, strong long-tenon neck joint, deluxe Kluson-style tuners. That translates very nicely in the hands: this has a certain integrity to it you can really feel during play. The neck is fairly slim and very cooperative, it's very friendly to move around on. The body is on the lighter side for a vintage LP and rings enthusiastically at the lightest touch. Plugged in, the pickups show their magical colours. The neck pickup is thick and warm, but with heaps of definition and sparkle and a sweet openness through the midrange. The bridge pickup has heaps of growl and bite, but there's a satisfying fatness and punch to it as well; there's a certain percussive and chiming quality to the tone you only get from a quality LP. The piece of maple on the top is gorgeous, it's bookmatched remarkably and draws the eye in with it's pleasing concentric lines. These are becoming harder and pricier to source, so word is obviously getting around about how good they are. The original Greco case and paperwork is a very unusual and welcome bonus. It's a good eg...g.
