(SOLD) Gretsch G6120T-55 Vintage Select Chet Atkins Orange Stain 2021
Gretsch G61020T-55VS, orange, made in Japan 2021. This is a knockout guitar, it really is. The 6120 launched in 1955, bearing the weighty endorsement of Chet Atkins, who was just about as big of a deal as it was possible to be in the guitar universe at the time. This model aims to recreate the specs and feel of the original 1955 offerings, so it's a little more deluxe than a regular Japan-made Pro Series. First, it gets the cowboy visuals: longhorns on the headstock, quirky western inlays on the fretboard, Chet decal on the guard, embossed G (for gangster?) above the tailpiece, luxury extra-wide Bigsby arm, arrow knobs... proper gold teeth details all around. It gets a couple of critical tonal upgrades too: a thin gloss nitro finish for maximum resonance, a fancy polished aluminum nut with a matching compensated pinned bridge and a set of glorious TV Jones DeArmond style single coils. The sound on offer is unreal. There's a wide, woody, warm midrange, with a tight and tuneful piano-like low end and a glistening, shimmery treble. The touch-sensitivity, articulation and dripping complexity are really quite something to hear, it does so much of the work for you in terms of bringing notes and chords to life in glorious glowing detail. The neck is a comfy rounded moderate C shape, and at 3.2kg it's both fairly lightweight and pleasingly balanced. This is a really special guitar, it's such a satisfying thing to have in your hands. Chet yeah!
