Guild X-175 Manhattan, sunburst, made in Korea 2013. This looks good, no? Guild enjoyed a big slice of the USA guitar market in the 50s and 60s, they weren't far behind Gibson and Fender in that era and have long enjoyed a reputation for quality instruments. The Newark St Collection offered updated versions of some of their classic models, in this case the 'Manhattan' full size jazz box. It's a lovely thing in the hands: loud and lively unplugged, with a comfy, straight slim neck and quality hardware. The soapbar single coils deliver a clear, rich voice with an assured low end and singing treble, lending dense chords a sweet balance of fullness and sparkle. The sunburst finish is helped along by the art-deco style hardware and three ply binding, it's surely a gorgeous creature. Djazztastic.
