Ibanez MC924 Musician Bass, made in Japan 1980, gold pearl finish. The Musician is an 80s icon, finding fame with esteemed players like John Entwhistle, Sting and Adam Clayton, among many others. This one hails to very early in the game for this model, so you get the cool soapbar pickups as per the 1979 model, but the preamp controls from the 1980-1 style. The gold finish is a non-catalog rarity: these normally only come in the walnut stain finish, so to find a tidy example in factory gold pearl is a minor miracle. It looks superb: the gold hits the sleek lines of the body perfectly, and paired with the gorgeous lush ebony board, pretty little abalone dot inlays and lightly aged gold hardware... oh boy, what a machine. These won so many famous fans and so much critical acclaim for good reason: it plays and sounds magical. The neck is super straight and stable. It's similar in shape to a P-bass, but you can easily get all the way up to the 24th fret with ease and the board feels lux under the fingers. The ash body with neck-through maple centre makes for an enormous tone. There's a mountain of natural low end and a growly, immediate midrange, all rounded out with a snappy and articulate top end. The powerful three-band EQ and pickup balancer allows for a huge range of tonal options; you can dial in all sorts of fun options and slot into almost any genre without changing basses. This is an absolute monster of a bass, and early examples like this one often list for far more cash, so if you're clever you'll make haste and claim this one in a while it's going.
