Kramer Pariah, red with flames, made in Korea 2010. When I first saw this, I was immediately reminded of Chester Bennington's flame wrist tattoos... probably speaks more about my misspent youth than anything else, but hey. Kramer were a massive deal in the 80s, they dominated the Superstrat shred market and boasted an artist roster that included Van Halen and Motley Crue. This is a later example, and while details are a bit foggy it seems to have been made in Korea around 2010. The neck shape borrows from the shred-style slim D shape, so it's moderate in width at the nut with a flat back and a decent taper, perfect for million-notes-per-minute mania. The two passive humbuckers are hot enough to thoroughly enjoy a healthy dose of gain, but they clean up nicely and can be split via the push/pull tone knob for a crisp clean tone. The alder body offers a more even frequency response than mahogany, so there's plenty of rounded understated bass and snappy treble on tap. The finish is surely going to divide opinions, but hey, it's hard to ignore, so that's good for the stage, right? #makechesterproud
