Music Man SUB Stingray 4, textured red, made in USA 2003. Yep, you read that right: these first generation SUB basses were made in California just like their big brothers. This borrows some features from the pre-Ernie Stingrays like having no belly carve and a two band EQ, but gets the wheel-style truss rod adjuster and six bolt neck like a modern example. The textured red finish is cool, before I found the name I was gonna call it Cherry Cola. It's a hard wearing finish, so you can throw this all over the stage and not worry too much. The Hipshot D-tuner is a cool little addition, it's very fitting on a rock machine like this. The tone has that classic vitnage Stingray growl: heaps of angry mids and a slicing definition, balanced by a tight and tuneful low end. These come around very seldom and really do feel vastly different to the newer Indonesian made stuff; it's a superb bass. Plus, a previous owner alleges he bought it off Flea at a flea market, so...
