Orville Les Paul Custom, made in Japan 1990, wearing black. Orville was Mr Gibson's first name, so it was a natural choice when Gibson began making some beautiful guitars under license in Japan for the local market. They were made at the always-excellent Terada factory, which still makes high end Gretsch guitars today. This particular beauty references the iconic 1968 Les Paul Custom, dressed in black and gold and dripping with class. It's not especially heavy for an LP, and the neck is a very agreeable 60s C style shape, so it's a comfortable and responsive player. The pickups are Japan-made, but (just quietly) I like them better than the USA-made 490 pickups you get in the higher end model: they're balanced, creamy and warm with a nice complexity and smoothness. The finish has a few marks and scuffs but looks pretty slick for an instrument well into middle age. For less cash than you'd pay for the high end Epiphone model currently on offer, this is whole lotta Les.
