Psychederhythm Psychomaster Limited, metallic black, made in Japan 2019. This is outstanding, I really like it. Psychederhythm are a small custom/menu style brand, operating out of a small workshop in Tokyo that also sells a few used and vintage pieces on the side. They do custom guitars if you don't mind a big price tag and a long wait, but mostly what they do is runs of 2-5 guitars in a particular configuration and finish. All their stuff shares a super-dialled aesthetic, they have a knack for making guitars that look superbly cool. This one has a gorgeous fine gold sparkle over black finish on the body, paired with a tort guard, chrome top hat knobs, a bound fretboard with blocks and a big headstock with the white button tuners. Oh boy, the thing looks unreal. The finish and fretwork are done with care and precision, and the hardware is top-end Gotoh stuff; it feels integrous and responsive in the hands. Now, these pickups: they're by a little builder called Vintage Vibe Guitars out of USA. The gent behind the company, Pete Biltoft, has a resume including designing high-end fabrication techniques in the nuclear weapons industry... so he's no dummy, and the pickups sound excellent. They're a 50s style Strat wind, so it's fat and punchy with a generous attack, some slicing chime on the top and a wide, eloquent midrange. The balance of liveliness and creamy fatness is remarkable, it's a lot of fun to play and a pleasure to hear. Psych stuff is extremely scarce outside Japan, and I've been nothing but impressed with every single example of theirs I've had the pleasure of playing, so do yourself a favour and claim this one. Oh, and I finally clicked that the brand name is a condensation of 'Psychedelic Rhythm' if that helps.
