PW Guitars Performer, made in Australia in 2014, pearl-white. PW Guitars is run by Matt Pavey & Steve White, a pair of former cabinet makers with a background in high quality custom furniture before turning their considerable talents to building instruments exclusively from Tasmanian timber. Their workshop is located in St Helens on Tasmania's stunning north east coast; it's a stellar spot. This one is a Tele-style shape, although it almost feels and sounds closer to a Gibson SG. The body is chambered golden cypress, so it's extremely light and resonant; the unplugged volume is extraordinary. The neck is celery top pine, it features some stunning tight grain and feels really sweet, and the board is casaurina, another native timber that resembles rosewood in appearance and tone but features a tighter grain structure. The PRS pickups offer plenty of output; they're very full and bright with a tight and punchy attack, and they're splittable to single coils for a different sound. This is really comes into it's own as a rock rhythm guitar, it loves big open chords and a nasty riffs. Being a unique and totally handmade piece from sweet local tonewoods and great hardware, this fetched around $2k when it was new; the used price reflects the relative obscurity of the brand and not the excellent quality of the guitar. If you want a rocking Tassie-timber custom Tele but don't want the long wait, this guy will put some hairs on your chest!
