Suhr Andy Wood Modern T SS, iron red finish, made in USA 2018. Andy rose to prominence in his early 20s by winning a major USA-wide guitar playing contest, and would go on to become a busy session and touring hired gun as well as a virtuoso instrumentalist in his own right. His style blends bluegrass style picking, blues-derived swagger with Vai-esque explosion lead playing, all delivered with effortless flow. The idea for his signature models was to take the bare shell of the classic Tele tone and mesh it with a hyper-playable 24-fret roasted maple neck. The neck: heck. In the hands, it feels so very well executed. It's a moderate, slim, rounded, quick profile with a sensible taper, super comfy edge and a very slick easy-access join. Roasting the wood adds stability and resonance, and the stainless steel frets make for fast movement... it's so comfy it's a little frightening. The swamp ash body is lightweight and joined in the middle, and finished in such a way as to bring out the beauty of the grain and the tonal qualities of the material. They use a blow torch to bring out the grain lines, then add the colour and a thin satin topcoat, so it feels really smooth and alive in the hands. The pickups were made especially for this model, and they're a little lower in output than the standard Suhr Modern offerings. The chime and sparkle on the top end is really lovely, with plenty of articulation and zest but no harsh brittleness. The complexity and width of the midrange and the self-assured plonky fatness on the low end is very juicy indeed. The colour scheme was inspired by a combination of vintage American muscle cars and Marvel comics, so the muted red and gold has a distinctive swagger about it. If you're after a T-style guitar that plays like a million bucks, this is a very good bet. Thanks Andy!
