Tokai Hard Puncher PB48-YS Sunburst 1981
Tokai Hard Puncher PB48, sunburst, made in Japan 1981. Is there a more perfect name for a bass than Hard Puncher? By 1981, the Tokai operation was in full swing and gaining plenty of recognition, and a dash of controversy, for their extremely well-made F and G style models. This is simple, but very good: it's lightweight, well balanced, super smooth and comfy to play and sounds enormous. The neck is a moderate shape: there's a bit of beef to wrap your hand around, without being huge, and the unplugged volume and natural resonance are exemplary. The tone is bright and clear, with a generous fat low end and plenty of creamy kick through the mids. It looks and sound like a well-played instrument... you can't fake all those miles on the clock. This is just back from a full re-wire from our handy house tech, so it's in tip-top shape ready to go straight to the gig. If you're gonna punch...
