Tokai Love Rock Custom LC60 Wine Red 1981
Tokai Love Rock Custom LC60, Wine Red, made in Japan 1983. Tokai's Love Rock series are widely regarded as some of the finest G-style instruments ever made in Japan. This one dates to 1983, right in the thick of Tokai's purple patch, and it's an amazing instrument. The Custom style models are harder to find than the Standard styles, so this is a cool score. In true Custom style, there's no maple top: it's carved mahogany, blessed with beautiful ribbon grain on show under the rich red finish. There's a bunch of yellowing, fading and scuffs around the finish: this has played it's fair share of tunes and possibly passively smoked a decent share of darts over the decades.. The neck is a super comfy deep vintage C, almost a V but not quite, and it's been rubbed up to a smooth finish by our handy house tech. The weight is pretty manageable at 4kg, and the natural resonance and responsiveness really is top notch. Plugged in: phwoar. The neck pickup is round, dark and weighty, with a jazzy warble. The bridge pickup is a creamy dream, with punch aplenty and more complexity than a Game of Thrones plot line. This is a super smart score and a real vintage Japan treasure.
