Yamaha Attitude 85, made in Japan 1992, red. The Attitude line of basses was developed in collaboration with bass legend Billy Sheehan, of Mr Big fame (among others!). There was a few versions of the model in the catalog, this one wasn't the cheapest version but isn't the eye-wateringly expensive Attitude Limited model either. It's got a great lightweight body with a great pair of deep cutaways that allows access all the way to the top of the board. The 'Live' pickups and high mass bridge pull a huge tone from the classy two piece ash body: heaps of attack and snap, but with a juicy grinding midrange and a self-assured thumping bass response. The P/J setup allows for thumpy P-style punch, growly aggressive Jazz-style grit or a hi-fi modern sound in the middle position. The neck is fairly slim and quick, tapering from a slim nut to a wider spacing up the top of the board; it feels really natural in the hands and allows for quick accurate playing. The dark trans red finish has a certain 90s charm to it, it lets the ash grain do most of the talking but looks classy next to the dark rosewood board and black hardware. This is a monster of a bass, it really delivers the goods. Thanks Uncle Billy!
