This snare is a bit of an enigma... It used to be a marching snare, made by Yamaha in Japan. The model (MS-314A) is conveniently stamped on the badge along with the 2 character date stamp for dating 1980s models. This one dates to 1982. The shell is relatively thin with what looks like 8 plies of Luan and rounded bearing edges, factory finished in 'heavy red.' Triple-flange hoops are equipped. Aftermarket die-cast hoops could be a cool option if you want an extra focused sound.

So its weird but it sounds cool. Currently, it has controlled sound clear in pretty disgraceful shape on the batter side. Bin this, replace it with something coated and you'll get much nicer overtones out of it. The snare wires are a bit rattly due to being a bit past their best-before. Chuck a set of 36-strand or 48-strand wires and you'll have a big chungus with tone for days.

Speaking of tone, the combination of shell thinness and rounded bearing edges give this drum heaps of shell activity and warmth. That extra shell resonance makes for a thick and rounded attack. It's relatively sensitive–a new batter and wires will return dividends here. It's moderately loud and overall just a massive vibe.
