(SOLD) Yamaha SR400 Super RnRoller Black 1979
Yamaha SR400 Super RnRoller, black, made in Japan 1979. Terrible model name, excellent guitar. These were Yamaha's late seventies take on the then-current 70s Strat, so it's got the cool big headstock, maple board, ash body and trad SSS pickup setup. It's a really nice thing in the hands: the maple neck is a sweet piece of tightly grained timber with some lovely visual details up close, arrow-straight and comfy in the hands. The body is pretty light in weight and resonates nicely with play, it has that certain feeling of liveliness that a few decades of play lends a guitar. The black finish is in remarkable shape, it's got a few marks here and there but looks more like four months old than four decades. Plugged in, this is a bright, zingy and open take on the classic Strat-spank. The neck pickup is especially good, it's a sweet balance of punchy attack and singing warmth. As with all vintage Yamaha stuff, this is a beautifully made instrument, all done by hand and crafted with utmost care. But yes, Super RnRoller is a pretty dumb name... got me there.
